How Do I Stop Procrastinating?
Folding Laundry…Packing…Grocery shopping…What do all these things have in common? They are the things I dislike and constantly procrastinate doing. The Laundry sits in the dryer for days, my suitcase sits in the dusty attic until the last minute, and the fridge slowly becomes bare as I put off going to the store.
We’ve all done it at some point. We push that thing off and wish we hadn’t later, or we get it done, but just by the skin of our teeth. Some things are pretty harmless in the long run. But what about when we procrastinate on really important things like our work, our business, or in our relationships? That’s when we can start to stress ourselves and others. So why do we keep doing it? More importantly how do we NOT do it next time? Here are three simple tips to get you out of the habit of procrastinating.
1. Admit it and recognize it:
If you are reading this blog you’ve probably already come to terms with the fact you might have a problem with putting things off until later. You probably think things like, “tomorrow, later, I’ll wait a little longer, maybe another time.” I’ve been there and it’s important to stop and reflect. How is this sort of thinking affecting areas of your life? Write it down. What could be better?
2. Understand why:
Don’t overcomplicate this part. Why do you procrastinate? It’s important to target why we do things so we can pinpoint what needs to change moving forward.
Here are some common reasons people procrastinate:
-Poor organizational skills
-Fear of failure
-Overestimating commitments
-Underestimating commitments
-Perfectionism
-Laziness
-Lack of self-control
3. Find what works for you:
Here comes the fun part, become proactive! You might have to try a few things and figure out what works best for you.
Here are some tips to get you started:
-Commit: Write a specific time-frame you’ll get it done and do it!
-Reward yourself: There’s nothing wrong with a little inscentive until you get into the habit.
-Ask for accountability: This is very important. Ask someone you trust to keep you accountable and be honest with them.
-Self talk: Ask yourself in the moment, “why do it later when I can do it now?” When you feel that brain train going off track, pull the lever and bring it back!
-Eliminate distractions: Go someplace you can focus. Turn off your phone if you can. Plan in advance for less distractions.
Last but not least give yourself some grace. Don’t beat yourself up or be too hard on yourself. Changing habits takes time and sometimes you may need a little outside help. It’s an amazing feeling when you accomplish something you were avoiding or putting off all together.
I’d love to be the one to help you kick that procrastination habit to the curb.
