5 Basic Self-Care Tips You Probably Forgot About
The word self-care gets thrown around a lot these days. So much so that I think it may have lost some of its' original meaning. I mean, what do you think of when you hear the word self-care? Maybe you think of things like a bubble bath, painting nails, or a glass of wine? Although those things are all forms of self-care, there is such a deeper aspect of self-care that we forget to tap into. Below I am going to give you 5 basic self-care tips that anyone can do.
1. Care for your body's basic needs:
Have you ever been so busy or distracted that when you finally stop for a break you realize you haven't eaten all day? Or skipped out on some sleep to finish a project? Maybe crashed on coffee or energy drinks to keep going? Yikes. Your body is the vehicle in which you explore this world and do all those busy activities. Take care of it! Your body needs food, feed it. Your body needs water, drink plenty. Your body needs sleep to function, get a good nights rest.
2. Take time to reflect:
Self reflection is such an important part of building self-awareness and caring for yourself. *(See my blog: "Are Self-Aware People More Successful?) Taking time to pause, be still, and think allows you to gain clarity and confidence in yourself again. When you reflect you release bottled emotions, process, and create a clear way to move forward. Whether it is journaling, meditation, prayer or anything else that allows you to sort your thoughts it is most certainly worth doing regularly.
3. JOMO instead of FOMO:
The joy of missing out vs. the fear of missing out. Ever heard of this one? To put it simply say yes to the things you want to say yes to and say no to the things you don't. Learn to take a leave of absence from social media. Re-connect with those you love and enjoy spending time with. Stop saying yes to a million different things just to please others. Slow down and take time for yourself without worrying about what everyone else is doing.
4. Move your body:
Although it is important to spend some time cozy on the couch it is also important to get up and move your body. Create time and space to exercise in a way that energizes you. Find a routine that you are excited to implement and stick with it. You might be surprised at just how much your body is capable of doing when you begin to exercise in a way that works for you.
5. Love and be loved:
Finally, love and be loved. Did you know you were created to love and to be loved? (See 1 Corinthians 13:13) Love satisfies the deep internal cry of our soul. When we love and receive love we are leaving room in our lives for growth and opportunity. We expand our minds past our own insecurities and fears and begin to live in true harmony with ourselves and others. We replace jealousy with respect, ignorance with understanding, and discontentment with peace.
Things to ponder...
Am I allowing love into my life?
Am I creating space in my life to love others?
What things must I let go of to give and receive more love?
