The work life of an entrepreneur can ebb and flow depending on all sorts of variables. One day you may feel on top of the world, your calendar full with clients, projects, or events and then the next month silence. Every business owner has experienced a business slump before but not everyone has a plan for when they do. So, what is an entrepreneur to do? Here are five effective things you can do to bounce back from a business slump.
1. CHECK IN WITH PAST CLIENTS
Sending a friendly email or giving past clients a call asking how they are doing can be an effective way to remind clients you are available. Reach out and ask if they have any questions or if they are in need of anything since the last time you worked together. They just may surprise you with an opportunity for a new project. Create a genuine connection with your past clients and focus on adding value. Their testimony and experience working with you can create incredible word of mouth marketing and connect you to potential clients.
2. CREATE A FREEBIE
Try writing or creating something relevant to your industry and then add it to your website as a free download. Use your download as a way to build your email-marketing list. Not only will this showcase your skills in a specific area but it will also serve to build your brand and attract your ideal client. This will help broaden your online audience and build your pool of potential new clients. Examples include: e-books, checklists, planners, and samples.
3. NETWORK
Schedule time for networking! How do people know if they want to work with you if they don't know who you are or what you are good at? Offer to help out pro bono for a nonprofit, host a workshop in your community, or even create an annual event that adds value and showcases all you have to offer. Not only will you get your name out to potential clients but you may also make some powerful connections with other business owners. Reach out to those connections to see if anyone needs help with an upcoming project or can pass on leads when they have too much on their plate.
4. POLISH UP YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA
It is important as a business owner to have a presence on social media. It is also important to keep that presence fresh and up to date. Your sites should grow and evolve as you do. Update photos and content that may be out of date. Check to see that your message is still relevant and true to you and who you want to connect with. Make it easier on yourself by scheduling out blog and social media posts in advance. Create a format you can follow even when you are short on time.
5. ADD TO YOUR PORTFOLIO
Never stop growing as an entrepreneur! Take a class, pursue a certification, or learn a new skill. Not only will you be able to add something new to your resume and feel inspired but you will create another avenue for connecting with your ideal client. Clients want to know that you are professional and give them the value they need. By adding to your portfolio you showcase your ability to be the best at what you do.
